Aston Villa vs West Ham – 10/22/23 – Preview

Touille Lewis, Staff Writer

This weekend, West Ham makes the trip to the West Midlands to take on Aston Villa at Villa Park. These two sides have played each other 118 times throughout their history with Aston Villa winning 38 times, West Ham winning 45 times, and the two sides drawing a total of 35 times. In recent history, West Ham has not lost to Aston Villa since May 9, 2015 and has a 10 game unbeaten streak currently against the Villans.

While the two men’s sides have had some amicable battles, it’s important to note that the women’s teams have not been so friendly with one another.

Last October, the two sides battled it out in the Women’s Super League at Villa Park. West Ham took an early lead with Dagný Brynjarsdóttir (yes, that’s a real name) and Honoka Hayashi netting two goals in the first 12 minutes of competition. Kenza Dali was able to cut the lead in half for Aston Villa in the 77th minute, but it would be too little too late for the Lionesses.

While Dali’s goal represented the last score of the game, West Ham wasn’t done throwing punches.

In the closing minutes of the match, Villa’s Sarah Mayling got into it with West Ham’s Hawa Cissoko which prompted Cissoko to throw a punch at Mayling and get sent off with a red card.

The on field arguments then spread to the dugout where West Ham’s manager Paul Konchesky was sent off as well. While girlfights can sometimes be described as ‘hot’ or ‘arousing’, this one left it’s mark as a despicable act that forever tarnishes the good standing of the Nanner League.

We can only hope that the momentum from this fight doesn’t make it’s way into Sunday’s men’s match.

Prediction: Both teams to score, West Ham or Draw, Over 2.5 goals (+260)
